No, operating a microlight is quite simple. (You can experience the aircraft’s controls during your Trial Introductory Flight.) You must be 15 or over and medically fit enough to hold a driver’s licence.

Do you need a licence to fly a microlight?

Yes, a licence is required to fly a microlight. Licenses are issued through either the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA) or Recreational Aircraft Australia (RAA.)

How long does it take to get a licence?

As with obtaining a driver’s licence, this varies from person to person. The minimum requirement is 20 hours of flight instruction before a licence may be issued. For many students, this is sufficient to reach the required standard of proficiency. Some students however may take longer to reach standard.?

What does it cost to get a licence?

Around $4000, depending on the hours of flying instruction required.

How much does a microlight cost?

New aircraft start at around $27 000 and range up to $70 000 plus. Good airworthy second-hand craft may be found for around $20 000 plus.

Do I need to buy my own microlight to learn to fly in?

No you don’t, lessons are usually given in the school’s aircraft. (Lessons can however be given in your own aircraft.)

Where can microlights be flown?

Anywhere in Australia except in controlled airspace (the area around airports with a manned control tower.)

How long can microlights fly without refuelling?

From 3 to 7 hours, depending on the type of aircraft. (Extra fuel may be carried on board in place of a passenger.)

Where can you keep a microlight?

Hangar space is available at a range of locations. As the wings are easily folded down however, a microlight may be stored in a garage and transported by trailer.
